Second day of rehearsals with the whole group of local performers. The nice surprise were seven new faces who pitched up at the hotel and wanted to join the process. At midday, we had to tell five of the seven that their English skills did not meet the project's requirements. Great news in fact, considering that we are getting more and more nervous that we will not find enough people who speak and/or write English very well, can work with a computer and on top of that are curious to participate in a theatre performance. Up until this point we have managed to recruit seventeen wonderful people and to tell a lot of wonderful people that they don't match the profile.
This is not a social project, but a piece of theatre, that simply can't do without these skills. D. explains our situation, saying that those who have the required qualifications, could take on any kind of job in this country - and probably make more money elsewhere. In turn, there are many who are interested, including those for whom the fees alone would be a reason to join, but who simply don't have the required skills. I realise that we demand a lot. I get confused. We are told that an unknown Dutch theatre company doesn't sound like a reference. We are running out of ideas. I hit rock bottom as D. tells us that the only way we can find more people, is that he and our other local collegues ask their friends to do them a favour.
